Gabriel Medina wins the 2021 ESPY Award!

The 29th ESPN ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) was held in New York City on July 10th.
” was awarded to the athlete who performed the most brilliantly that year.

Medina won his first ESPY in the Best Men's Action Sports category, beating out supercross rider Cooper Webb and snowboarders Yuto Totsuka and Marcus Cleveland. Medina was nominated for an ESPY in 2019, but lost to skateboarder Nyjah Huston.

Currently at the top of the WSL leaderboard, Medina is the first surfer to qualify for the WSL Final 5 and will compete for the world title at the Rip Curl WSL Finals at Lower Trestles this September.

"The ESPYs are the Academy Awards of sports. This is a huge honor," seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore explained when she was nominated for the ESPYs in 2018. Gilmore has won two ESPYs, the most of any surfer.
